Making sense of the digital universe

Holiday gift ideas

Yup - I’m one of “those” guys. I have a job that gets me just about anything that runs on electricity. I get them free or at a discount, and if I pay - my company buys the stuff, never me. So what does my wife do for Christmas gifts?

Buys me socks and underwear.

Not that I’m complaining - I do seem to go through socks fast. But, maybe I have a little unique insight into what to buy a guy like me. Read this, and see if you come up with any ideas of your own…

I just can’t get what I want…

I’ve been thinking about a digital camera post for a while, but it’s a daunting order. There are just so many cameras out there, and so very few that meet the basic requirements of the masses. But, I’ve hit on a couple recently that seem to have a few things going for them, so I thought I’d expound on them just briefly. You ain’t gonna find the magic answer to the universe here, but you might find a few interesting cameras to take a look at…

My Nasty Nano

Apple computer's new iPod Nano
The question on just about everybody’s mind these days - will George Bush ever buy an iPod Nano?! Well, maybe not on everyone’s mind, but if you’re pondering an mp3 player - should you be concerned with the Nano? I only have a few ramblings on this topic, so read on…

Apple Airport Express? No thanks!

Travel much? Stay in hotels? Use a laptop with wireless capability? Don’t have a passion for Apple products (or a pallete for Apple prices)? Belkin’s new wireless travel router is definitely for you. Check out why, and a couple quirks with this inexpensive alternative to the Airport Express. (more…)

Geek Eye story in Fortune magazine

For those of you who may have missed our original story in Fortune Magazine almost two years ago, here’s a quick re-cap:

The editors of Fortune called me up, and told me if I chose to accept this assignment - I’d have 2 weeks to assemble a team, assess the hostile territory of an average american white-collar home, forge the relationships with the “arms” dealers, deploy the solution and get out!

“Sounds like fun!” I said - and we were off!

Klipsch iFi - BlamO for the iPod

Klipsch iFi systemWorking with the guys at Klipsch is a joy. First, they have some pretty cool stuff - speakers that absolutely crank (or just plain sound good when hooked up to my Sonos). They have serious rocker appeal, given their long history of the infamous Klipsch Horn Tweeters that my crazed, pot-smoking upstairs neighbor would jam to Cheap Trick on in Iowa back in the 80’s. And heck - they’re even keeping up with the times by releasing stuff like the iFi and Zon house audio system.

I got one of the iFi systems in for review, and what did I think? (more…)

Dell Plasma goodness

Dell plasma tvI had a 42″ High Definition plasma delivered by Dell a couple weeks ago, and after opening the box and installing it in my test environment - I thought I’d better share a few impressions. I’ll include a more comprehensive Plasma analysis in a few weeks, when I’m done reviewing units from Dell, HP, Samsung, LG, Runco, JVC, Panasonic, Viewsonic, Pioneer and possibly a few others. Satellite Radio smackdown

Satelite in orbit
I’ve been using a couple Sirius and XM satellite radio units for the past 6 months, and there are definitely differences between these services. Besides the differences between the Delphi and Audiovox units, there are some content and functional differences as well. Do they sound better than FM radios? Do they cost much? Which one is easier to use? If I’m into sports - which should I get? I guess it’s high time I answered at least some of these questions… (more…)

Feeds enabled!

Well, I finally noticed how many people were trying to get these stories via RSS, so I did a little research and discovered there was a bug in the blog software I’m using (Wordpress) to enable RSS feeds.

So, I fixed it.

If you’re an RSS fan - go forth and enjoy GenX Digital via RSS!

If not - expect a new story tomorrow. I have a ton of new equipment in house, and am in the throes of testing it. This includes new Plasma, LCD and rear-projection TV’s, a DVDO iScan HD, ADS Upconverter (which I reviewed already), an Algolith Mosquito filter and a few other things I just haven’t gotten around to yet.

Plasma’s are crap!

Well, maybe not plasma’s, but the confusion swirling around High Def TV’s in general.

I’m here to say - with the right stuff, we are most definitely on the next wave of high quality couch-potato crops. The essence of the problems are this: The TV’s out there (plasma’s, rear projection, front projection) have MUCH more resolution than the TV’s we’ve all grown up with. They are capable of showing somewhere around 4 times as much information as the old “standard definition” sets. And hot-damn, 4 times the information can be absolutely spectacular (as anyone who has wandered into a Best Buy store lately can attest).

So, why do I say there’s such a problem?
